निसर्गाच्या विलक्षण हिरव्या रंगाच्या अनेक तऱ्हा पाहत, निरनिराळ्या फुलांचा नजरा बघत, वन्य प्राण्यांचा अधिवास बघत, त्यांची कधी चाहूल घेत तर क्वचित दर्शनाची इच्छा करत घनदाट जंगलातल्या पायवाटेने चालत जाणं ह्यासारखं रोमांचक क्वचितच दुसरं काही असेल. हा आणि ह्याबरोबर इतरही काही विशेष अनुभव घेण्यासाठी आपल्याला कोल्हापूर जिल्ह्यातील राधानगरी अभयारण्याला नक्कीच भेट द्यायला हवी.

राधानगरी वन्यजीव अभयारण्याला महाराष्ट्र सरकारने १९८५ साली मान्यता दिली. आणि हे पर्यटकांचे पश्चिम घाटातले अतिशय आवडते ठिकाण बनले ते इथे असणाऱ्या जैव विविधतेमुळे. दाजीपूर अभयारण्य म्हणूनही ओळखला जाणारा हा भाग पूर्वी कोल्हापूरच्या मराठ्यांसाठी खाजगी शिकारीसाठी राखीव होता. ३५१.१६ चौ. किलोमीटरवर पसरलेला हा भाग इथल्या सौंदर्य आणि आकर्षकतेमुळे अरण्यप्रेमींना आकर्षित करतो. प्रामुख्याने गवा हा इथला बघण्यासारखा प्राणी आहे.

कोल्हापूर

कोल्हापूर ही मंदिरांची भूमी असून ते महाराष्ट्राचे श्रद्धास्थान आहे. पंचगंगा नदीच्या काठावर वसलेले कोल्हापूर हे राजवाड्यांचे आणि बागांचे शहर आहे. कोल्हापूर हे मराठ्यांचे ऐतिहासिक शहर आहे. महालक्ष्मीचे मोठे स्थान असल्यामुळे त्याला दक्षिण काशी असेही म्हटले जाते. ह्या शहराला मोठा पुरातत्त्वीय आणि सांस्कृतिक वारसा लाभला आहे. तसेच इथल्या चप्पल आणि गूळदेखील प्रसिद्ध आहे. ह्या यादीत खास कोल्हापुरी पदार्थ विसरून चालणार नाहीत. इथले वैशिष्ट्यपूर्ण रस्से, मिसळ पाव आणि मटणाचे सुके पदार्थ अतिशय प्रसिद्ध आहेत.

Dajipur (Radhanagari) wildlife sanctuary is located in the catchments areas of the major reservoirs viz. "Shahu Sagar"and "Laxmi sagar" in Kolhapur district. The total area of Sanctuary is 351.16 sq.km..

Biodiversity:

The topography of entire protected area is undulating with steep escarpments. Soil is reddish and lateritic. Plateaus or "Sadas" have high percentage of bauxite ore

Flora:

The main forest types are " Southern semi evergreen forest", " Southern Moist Mixed deciduous forest" and " Southern evergreen forest". The The forest crop density in this area is between 0.4 to 0.9. The forest at "Kaladung" & "Patycha Dang" are having crop density more than 0.9 Dominant species are Anjani, Jambul, Hirda, Awala, Pisa, Ain, Kinjal, Amba, Kumbha, Bhoma, Chandala, Katak, Nana, Umbar, Jambha, Gela, Bibba etc.. Karvi is found almost all over the area. Climbers such as Shikekai, Garambi are quite frequent. Shrubs species and Medicinal plants such as Karvand, Vagati, Ranmiri, Tamalpati, Toran, Dhayati, Kadipatta, Narkya, Murudsheng, etc. with small quantity of Bamboo are also found Quite a large numbers of ephemerals, bulbs of seasonal plants are found.

Fauna:

This sanctuary is well known for bison(500), the tallest and the most splendid of living wild oxen. Few other animals have the combination of bucolic charm and great-muscled power of the gaur. A big lone bull and calf running with its mother or a large herd grazing in the jungles, is a memorable sight that one would recall with delight years later. Other animals, sheltered in the sanctuary Leopard(5), Sloth bear, Wild boar(80), Barking deer(140), Mouse deer(80), Sambar(120), Giant squirrel(50), Wild dogs(70) are major animals found in the protected area. Many types of Reptiles amphibians and many birds species such as vultures eagles, Jungle fowl, Quails, Plovers, Sand pipers, Owlets, Doves, Owls, Nightjars, Kingfishers, Bee-eater, Hornbills, Woodpeckers, Bulbul, Flycatchers, Warblers, Wagtails, Sunbirds are commonly seen.

Sagareshwar sanctuary has a religious, cultural and archaeological significance also. The name is derived from an old famous Shiva temple and a place of pilgrimage since a very long time. The temple that lies right inside the sanctuary is not really one single temple but one large temple and a complex of 51 small temples, all from the Satvahana period. There is one more temple called Kamal Bhairao or Kal Bhairao, located on edge along a steep cliff. The entrance to that temple is through a narrow tunnel and the temple itself is partially hewn out of hard basalt rock. Both these temples deserve serious attention of the archaeologist.
